You CAN Wear A Skirt In Winter--Here's How

By Kristen Peuvion on February 4, 2015

February just started. Much of the country recently endured a snow storm, whether it was Juno or the blizzard like conditions that hit the Midwest. So that means snow, ice and freezing temperatures, which let’s be honest, ladies, isn’t ideal skirt or dress weather, especially when you’re trekking halfway across campus just to get to class.

But wearing a skirt or dress in the winter doesn’t have to be totally off limits. You just have to know how to do it the right way. So take note of these “winterized” skirt ideas and soon you’ll have no problem rocking your favorite skirt or dress in the weeks to come.

If you take a look at fashion bloggers all over social media, you’ll see that they all have one thing in common: tights. Here we see Leandra Medine of The Man Repeller fashion blog sporting a pair of opaque tights to make her skirt look more wintery.

Tights are a no brainer for anyone who doesn’t want to sacrifice their short hemlines and flirty silhouettes just because of a little cold weather. But don’t just get any pair of tights.

The best pair of tights to get you through a chilly winter day is a fleece lined pair. It will give you an added layer of warmth that a pair of sheer black tights just can’t give you.

A pair of tights doesn’t just automatically give your skirt or dress a wintery feel, though. You also need to make sure your skirt isn’t too summery. You don’t want to be walking around campus in the middle of February wearing a white linen skirt. It just doesn’t work in the winter.

Instead, opt for fabrics that work better in the winter. What exactly are those fabrics, you might ask?

Well, just take a look at the latest fashion magazines and fashion blogs and you’ll see an abundance of leather, wool and plaid. You can’t go wrong with any of these materials in frigid winter temperatures. The bulk behind these materials will keep you much warmer than some other, summertime fabrics.

While these materials may be the best skirts to wear in the winter, that doesn’t mean they’re the only ones! In fact, a lot of prints can work a winter skirt, too. Animal print will always be in style like we see in this Elle street style look.

Also, flowers can surprisingly work for the winter, not just the warmer months as we see in another look from Elle street style. If you’re going to opt for a floral print though, make sure it isn’t too overwhelmingly meant for the summer.

Darker florals and muted colors often work best for the winter months. Save the bright, cheery florals for May.

Besides choosing the right skirt and the right tights, to truly make your skirt work for the winter, you need to focus on the styling. You can virtually wear any skirt (within reason) in the winter as long as the rest of your outfit works for the season as well.

If you’re going to wear a skirt that’s on the tighter side, pair it with an oversized, chunky sweater, or if you’re planning on wearing a fuller, midi skirt, pair it with a delicate, thin crew-neck sweater. Finish off either look with a fabulous winter coat and your look will scream winter wonderland!

When it comes to shoes to pair with your skirt in the winter, go for styles that are clearly meant for cooler weather. This means booties, combat boots, over-the-knee boots or loafers, even. A shoe that completely covers your foot or toes will be most appropriate for your winterized look.

Try over-the-knee boots with a short, flirty miniskirt for a fun, sexy look on a date or out with your friends. You could also try a pair of chunky loafers with a modest length skirt or dress like we see here in a photo from Vogue UK.

So stop dreading this cold weather and stop using it as an excuse not to wear your favorite skirts and dresses.

These ideas definitely give you the courage to try out a winter skirt or dress look ASAP. Just take note of these ideas and you’ll wonder why you didn’t think to try a skirt in the winter sooner.
